Portkeys has updated their on-set monitors with the launch of the Portkeys BM5WR, a 5.5-inch display with a newly updated OS that claims to improve significantly on their previous version, whilst also getting them closer to the competition (like SmallHD).
Top 3 New Features of the PortKeys BM5WR
2200 nits for Outdoor Visibility
For those that run and gun or spend more time shooting outdoors rather than in studios, this is probably the standout feature of the monitor. This ultra-bright display ensures clear visibility, meaning you might even get away with not having to use shades or hoods. We have yet to test it, but if it delivers, we will definitely let you know.
3 Colour Gamut Calibration
At this price point you can't expect to have it all, but with 100% coverage of Rec709 and 85% of P3-DCI and 85% P3-D65 - you are covered extremely well. The vast majority of delivery is still Rec709 so we would say for the next 3 or so years this monitor will hold its usefulness.
Wireless Camera Control Across Multiple Camera Brands
Currently the Portkeys BM5IV supports RED, ARRI, Nikon, Panasonic, Canon, Z Cam, Sony, Blackmagic - the only shooters we can't recommend this for is Fuji (sorry Fuji-juicers).
For the rest of us though, being about to adjust key camera settings directly from the monitor, eliminating the need for additional remote controls lets you move much faster on set. Once again, we have a couple of the cameras that are supported so we cannot wait to give it ago - especially for the BOX cameras with tiny or no monitors at all (looking at you BS1H).
I know we said 3, but we are also going to include Dual-Screen Monitoring, especially since you can view the 16:9 landscape frame and a vertical 9:16 version at the same time, on the same screen. This is going to be super useful for social media content creators and those where the client asks for both at the same time. So this is just the press release/announcement - stay tuned for when we actually get a hold of it and we can answer all your questions on it!
